Why is the International Date Line (IDL) located in the Pacific Ocean?

The prime meridian was established to run through Greenwich, England when the times zones wee originally established. That put the international date line at 180 degrees, or on the opposite side of the world. These are imaginary lines, only established to keep track of time.
